Consisting of letterbook, 1865-1873, and merchant's ledger, 1856-1872 and 1921; letterbook, 1865-1873, of correspondence discussing various topics, including social and economic conditions in Charleston during Reconstruction and business accounts for operation of a cigar factory located in Charleston, etc. Topics represented include the 1868 constitutional convention; recovery of bells for steeple at St. Michael's Church; military administration of Gen. Daniel E. Sickles; bankruptcy of Fraser, Trenholm and Company; and information about Cuban firm Bonafont and Salas, and the "La Valentina" cigar factory. Tylee's correspondents include his aunt Adeline Throckmorton; his brother-in-law James S. Drayton; New York banker Andrew Mills; D.J. Conklin; bibliographer Joseph Sabin; and his employers Jose Bonafont and Ramon Salas. Account book, 1852-1860, documenting names and sales of men's clothing and accoutrements; ledger, 1856-1873 by Tylee, documents consumer spending for various items of clothing, altering, and tailoring; and other later additions, 1921, by another hand list, when volume used as an address book by a Charleston resident. Also includes undated typescript copy of Tylee's Confederate military service, Nov. 1860-22 Feb. 1865 (4 sheets) re enlistment in Charleston and service with Vigilant Rifles, Nov.-1860-5 Feb. 1861 and with "Walters Battery (Washington Artillery)" listing various sites around S.C. during Civil War, until taken prisoner, 22 Feb. 1865; notes, ca. 16-31 Dec. 1863, recording meal of "turkey rice" for Christmas dinner, and listing letters received and sent; and accounts with Capt. G.W. Walter, for July-Dec. for food and cash.
